Shelley & Grant’s Hemp House
Shelley and Grant are building an extension to their existing period home in Kensington using hempcrete, an environmentally friendly building material which mixes the fibres of hemp plants, lime, sand and water. To pay homage to the material they used to build their sustainable home, Shelley and Grant wanted to display an image of a hemp plantation to both sides of the sliding door that connects the old house with the new extension. They have written a blog about the building of their hempcrete home. Click here to visit their blog.
From Idea to Wallpaper
Shelley and I spent some time searching stock images online for a suitable image of a hemp plantation to apply to a sliding door measuring 2185mm (h) x 1200mm (w). Nerdy looking scientists kept getting in the way of a good plantation shot! Eventually we found an image via Fotolia and downloaded the highest resolution version of this image to avoid pixellation when blowing this image up to the proportions of the sliding door. The image was printed onto opaque removable wallpaper which comes with its own environmental credentials, essentially phthalates & PVC free as well as being biodegradable over time. We also liquid laminated the surface due to the daily human contact that will come as a result of opening and closing the door. Not really necessary when used as a wallpaper.
The renovation will be completed in the next 6 weeks. We returned the wrapped door to the cavity slider. It represents the gateway to the new renovation via a small hallway that links to the existing heritage home, a visual portal of sorts. The image has been applied to both sides of the door. As a final aside this home also includes a hemp built brewery on premise!
